Sooley by John Grisham |
- John Grisham -
It seems like every sports book is about the underdog. And why not? It's a great storyline that never gets old. From rags to riches is what makes these stories so fulfilling, even if you know they are going to win in the end.
Sooley is Grisham's take on the classic underdog sports tale, but he takes it to the extremes...he starts with a South Sudanese refugee who loses everything, is not up to the level of College basketball, and is only given a spot on the team where he rides the bench because of pity (and that great foreshadowing hint that the kid is brimming with raw talent, unpolished raw talent). Of course, the kid never gives up, and what do you think happens when there is a timely injury and he is given a chance in the big game? I'll let you read the wild ride from there.
The book is somewhat predictable, but you can probably guess what's going to happen from the first few pages of the book. If you like the underdog sports story, which I do, you'll like this one too.
One critique I have is that Grisham takes it almost too far - the underdog is far too under-doggy and the high point is almost far too high to believe. I get what he was trying to do, but just like too much icing on a cake, it makes it hard to eat. Am I right John?
Oh, and there is no lawyer. Which is always strange when you pick up a John Grisham novel.
